SOMALIA JOURNALIST GUNNED DOWN.

Men armed with pistols Tuesday killed Somali journalist Abdirizak Ali Abdi alias Silver.

Mr Abdi was killed in Galkayo town, 750km north of the capital Mogadishu, on Tuesday evening.

He was working for Daljir Radio, a broadcaster based in Galkayo town and was also reporting from the town for Horn Cable TV, a largely Somali news and programmes television.

Daljir Director Mohamed Abdulahi Koshin confirmed the incident, stating the attackers shot Mr Abdi in the head and chest, killing him on the spot.

“The journalist was killed by two hooded men in the town,” said Mr Koshin.

Daljir Radio Programmes Editor Abdifatah Omar Ghedi expressed shock at the killing.

“(Abdirizak Ali Abdi) Silver was a young, dynamic man who has contributed greatly to the local media,” said Mr Ghedi.

Mr Abdi is survived by his widow and two children.

Most hazardous

Security forces for Puntland, a semiautonomous state in north-eastern Somalia, who rushed to scene of crime made no arrests, according to reports from Galkayo.

The killing of Mr Abdi adds to three the number of Somali journalists killed in the war-torn country in this year.

He is also the fifth journalist killed in Galkayo town in recent years, three of them working with Daljir Radio.

Tens of journalists and media personnel have been murdered in Somalia, most of them in Mogadishu, rendering the country one of the most hazardous for media personnel globally.

Journalists and media officials face assassinations and threats while media houses are occasionally closed down or properties taken by forces loyal to different political groupings.

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ), a media association in Somalia, condemned the murder of Mr Abdi.

The Chairman of the Media Association to Puntland (MAP), Mr Feysal Khalif, also condemned the killing.
